ANDREW WALKER ANDREW WALKER 3RD COAST MUSIC MAGAZINE John Conquest - JOHN THE REVEALATOR - Looking Back On NotSXSW 2007 - "Best of Show is a tricky one here, as everybody truly excelled, but I have to go with GURF MORLIX & SAM BAKER, who combined their sets into one amazing and mesmerizing display of songwriting and performing talent. I had no idea what to expect with the CHICAGO HOUSE tribute on Friday. Au fond, it was targeted at people who were acoustic music lovers in Austin 12 to 20 years ago ...we did pretty good. ... to represent "The Lost Generation" ... Canadian visitor ANDREW WALKER ... stepped in to fill most of a time slot left empty by Michael Fracasso ... Still, Peg & Glynda gave them all a big 'We would have booked them' thumbs up." April Issue, 2007 www.3rdcoastmusic.com Note: Andrew Walker performed by invitation at 3RD Coast Music Magazine's SXSW Party "In Honor of Chicago House" on Friday March 16, 2007 preceding a set by Texas Flatlander, Butch Hancock. After Walker opened for Slaid Cleaves in 2004 Cleaves scrawled, "Hey Andrew, nice job at the Cactus Cafe!" on an event poster, which is proudly on display at www.andrewwalkermusic.com. The Canadian artist's soft vocals and clever lyrics have helped him establish a loyal fan base in Austin. Listening to Walker play now, you might never guess that he was once the lead man for alternative Ontario roots band, the Mummbleducks. Walker's solo album, "Floating Shift," marks his transformation from alternative-rocker to acoustic folk artist. The album mixes Americana, folk and pop sounds. Tonight Walker will be followed by the Austin soul band Nakia. - Lauren Dimitry Kudos "Andrew, you have 3 or 4 songs as good as Dylan or Lucinda" GURF MORLIX "i like the songs you sent me. if Andrew's stuff is all like this - he'll make a great record." BUDDY MILLER "Andrew did a GREAT job." SAM BAKER "They like you .." GURF MORLIX Americana Songwriter Round with Gurf Morlix, Sam Baker and Andrew Walker Cafe Caffeine, Austin, Texas June 2, 2006 “ Hey Andrew Nice Job at the Cactus Cafe! SLAID CLEAVES” Artist signed Event Poster Andrew Walker, Opening Act for SLAID CLEAVES Cactus Cafe, Austin, Texas, December 9, 2004 ![]() Live Review “Texas Tea & Coffee had its grand opening Nov. 20, which featured live music by folk-country artists Michael Fracasso of Austin and Canadian Andrew Walker. ... Walker, right at home in Texas, wore a blue jean jacket while playing guitar, and sang several songs about Canada, rail yards and lost loves. He stood on the shallow stage and prefaced each song with the story inspiring it. "This is a song about where I grew up ... My mom called it the 'rear end' of Ontario, but I liked it," he said before his third number.” - The Lariat Online, Baylor University, Texas, USA, November 2004 ANDREW WALKER " Walker does no wrong ... nails the ten songs on this album. Definitely worth seeking out ! " 4 ½ Stars. TORONTO STAR, Vit Wagner "... unpretentious appeal ... a finely crafted debut CD." EXCLAIM ! - MUSIC FANZINE - PRINT & INTERNET EDITIONS - CROSS BORDER CANADA - USA RECORD REVIEW 2003 - ANDREW WALKER CD - FLOATING SHIFT - HEISE HILL RECORDS "As a rising figure on the Toronto scene, Walker has assembled a strong supporting cast for this fine effort, one that … should propel him to the forefront of the Canadian roots/pop scene. It’s hard to go wrong with musicians like guitarist Colin Cripps, pedal steel maestro Kim Deschamps, drummer Gavin Brown and even frequent Neil Young/Bob Dylan bassist Tim Drummond on board, but their work is only a complement to Walker’s collection of tunes. In the classic Can-Rock tradition, Walker’s twang seems inherent and his pop side seems to struggle against it. But it’s that struggle that produces standout tracks like ‘Charity’ and ‘The Fence.’ ‘Slow Turn Around’ and ‘Seven Years’ also attest that Walker is confident stepping out on his own. In all, Floating Shift is a more than confident opening statement from an artist to take note of in the coming year." www.exclaim.ca POP MATTERS - AMERICAN MULTI-MEDIA MAGAZINE - PRINT & INTERNET EDITIONS - CHICAGO, IL RECORD REVIEW - 10 BEST MUSIC CD’s OF 2003 #6. ANDREW WALKER - FLOATING SHIFT - HEISE HILL RECORDS "This Toronto perform has released a small indie-record that is a mere ten songs in length, but given the quality and depth of the songwriting, the alt.country or Americana styles have rarely sounded this perfected and polished. Laid back without falling into a lull, Walker brings to mind a poppy Jeff Tweedy or a Jim Cuddy-led Blue Rodeo on the opener "Charity". With help from musicians such as Colin Cripps (the guitarist and beau of Kathleen Edwards), Walker takes the opportunity to show what he has to offer. And it's a hell of a lot! And have Kleenex ready for "Seven Years". You've been warned!" www.popmatters.com/music/best2003 FREIGHT TRAIN BOOGIE - AMERICANA INTERNET MAGAZINE & RADIO SHOW - SANTA ROSA, CA BILL FRATER RECORD REVIEW 2003 - 4 Stars "Andrew Walker comes from Toronto and spent many years playing in rock bands before Floating Shift, his first solo endeavor. There’s a humble maturity that seems to pervade his songs. The sound alternates between tender folk songs and some jangly power pop gems. Tim Drummond (Neil Young) and Kim Deschamps (Blue Rodeo, Cowboy Junkies) are the only familiar names on the credits, but good players and arrangements throughout. He’s got all the stuff, just no one’s heard of him in the States. Of course, Fred Eaglesmith started out that way too. Worth looking for!" www.freighttrainboogie.com ALT COUNTRY TAB - AMERICANA-ROOTS INTERNET MAGAZINE - EUROPE RECORD REVIEW 2003 - 4 ½ Stars "One of this years best records … from one of Canada's leading singer/songwriters … he is accompanied by some well known musicians such as Tim Drummond the former bass player for Neil Young and Bob Dylan to Kim Deschamps the pedal steel guitarist who has worked with The Cowboy Junkies and Blue Rodeo. Overall a gem of a disk! Highly recommended!" AMERICANA UK - AMERICANA-ROOTS INTERNET MAGAZINE - BRITAIN RECORD REVIEW 2003 - 4 Stars "Hell, this is some revelation. … a work of musical and emotional depth that seeps out of the speakers, occupies the room and makes you sit down and listen. … it’s so refreshing to hear an … un-hyped artist writing and playing direct, personal songs with genre-dodging dexterity. … this is folk and roots rock infused with … suppressed desire and haunting regret; … austere, brooding and mysterious … emotionally authentic indie roots rock." ![]() |
