Andrew Walker in Texas 2006From the ridges and moraines of NEWMARKET, ONTARIO, CANADA to Hill Country's AUSTIN, TEXAS, USA, Andrew Walker knows the grueling two day drive across the Great Lakes and down on through the dense hinterland of America. Fair Warning! This Canadian Songwriter will break your heart. Songs of yearning and bone felt gristle with landscapes of metaphors so deep, they make Andrew Walker required listening. As an unknown in America, the electricity and charisma of his live solo OPENING ACT AT THE CACTUS CAFE in Austin captivated the hushed packed house of discriminating SLAID CLEAVES fans. Just down Hwy. I-35, Andrew Walker's tabletop deliveries, folk-singer style, left ardent FRED EAGLESMITH TEXAS WEEKEND fans gape mouthed in their benches at historic GRUENE HALL. Now known as a rising star songwriter in both Toronto and Austin, Andrew often performs as a duo with steel guitar guru, KIM DESCHAMPS. The Americana Songwriter Round at Cafe Caffeine in Austin, Texas June 2, 2006 was a SOLD OUT success featuring Andrew Walker along with GURF MORLIX and SAM BAKER. Michael Fracasso, Susan Gibson, The Resentments, Nathan Hamilton, Michael O'Connor, Leeann Atherton, and Shelley King have all welcomed his performances. From Deadman's 'Texas Tea & Coffee' Cafe in McGregor to 'Tavern In The Gruene' in New Braunfels, the Saxon Pub, Threadgill's, Momo's, Jovita's, Alligator Grill, Ruta Maya, Maria's Taco Xpress, Longbranch Inn, SXSW Parties ... you get the picture. ![]() photo by J Griffis Smith Andrew Walker continues to pursue a STUDIO RECORDING of ten select new songs. He has a truckload. Currently this project is in an extended writing and pre-production demo phase. Austin's newest, state of the art recording studio 'Premium Recording', built by #1 Billboard Chart topper, Texas Songwriter, BRUCE ROBISON, is interested in a supporting role. In Toronto, Andrew Walker released his solo CD FLOATING SHIFT on Heise Hill Records (2003) to rave reviews from North American and European music websites. It boasts Neil Young/Bob Dylan bassist, TIM DRUMMOND as a co-writer and session musician. Kim Deschamps first becomes involved during the recording of this CD (Charlie Robison, Barenaked Ladies, Cowboy Junkies, Blue Rodeo). JEFF MCMURRICH (Sea Snakes, Picastro, Hidden Cameras) and FRAZIER MOHAWK (Buffalo Springfield, The Monkees) both had deep pockets and hands in its production. FLOATING SHIFT was recorded at Puck's Farm Studio and The Tragically Hip's studio, THE BATHOUSE with Ken J Friesen, near Lake Ontario. Two songs from this CD are featured on two Canadian TV Series' and his song, 'LAND OF NO GOODBYES' receives extended airplay in select Canadian markets. During this time, Andrew Walker OPENED SOLO for STEVE FORBERT at HUGH'S ROOM (another tough crowd held quiet). He also performed with his band at the Toronto BENEFIT CONCERT FOR ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO, North By North East (NXNE), Canadian Music Week (CMW), and regularly in many Queen Street, Toronto nightclubs. Andrew Walker's mid 90's punk-alt-country band, 'THE MUMMBLEDUCKS', released an award winning CD 'NORTH OF THE RIDGES' on RODEO RECORDS. This can still sometimes be found on Rare CD websites based in Europe for $30.00 or so. THE MUMMBLEDUCKS appeared in clubs all over Ontario and received notice as a contributor to the Queen Street Scene in Toronto. The band was featured in television specials and had popular music videos in Canada. |

AMERICANA SONGWRITER ROUNDGURF MORLIX, SAM BAKER and ANDREW WALKER![]() photo by J Griffis Smith An over capacity crowd of 85+ left precious little standing room for the rapt, attentive audience drinking in the fine songwriting and musical stylings .. new, unreleased songs and fan favorites alike at Cafe Caffeine! Special thanks to KGSR Daily Demo featuring Sam Baker, KUT, Austin Chronicle, News 8 Austin TV and The Austin Music Society for advance promo support! "Looks like your first promotion was a great success! The sound was very good and Andrew was, I think, the best of the lot. I've never heard him play or sing better, especially with Gurf adding some licks. " Teri Sarver, Austin music fan "It was of course a joy to hear Gurf playing some quiet solos for Sam and Andrew and to see the myriad of musicians who had come to sit at the feet of the masters -- Brent Malkus, Jackson, Leeann Atherton, Russell Beach, Melissa Greener, Bryce Clifford, Kim Deschamps (whose lovely wife Karen had organized this gig for us), and many others." Andrew Walker in Texas 2004So here's the scoop...After three days and 30 hours road driven, Andrew blew into Austin, Texas in late October, just in time for falling temperatures, rising water and tornado watches. In the last month or so he's played The Saxon Pub, Threadgill's South, The Longbranch Inn, The Cactus Cafe, Maria's Taco Xpress, Ruta Maya Cafe and Leeann Atherton's Full Moon Barn Dance. He's even played out of town in McGregor, Tx opening up for Michael Fracasso at the Texas Tea and Coffee Cafe, part of Troubadour Studios. He's talked with Ray Wylie Hubbard about doing his radio show, "Roots + Branches " , met with Gurf Morlix, set up co-writes with various Texas songwriters including Susan Gibson (Wide Open Spaces) and has plain flatout kept his head spinning with hand shakes and plans to meet, talk and play with movers and shakers all over town. He now resides in a haunted apartment in South Austin with no phone, just stumbling distance from the Continental Club. Outside his back door are three headstones that are guarded by a pot bellied pig named Starr. The neighbours say of this old converted motel that " yeah there have been sightings and weird phenomena but it's pretty cool here!". Stay tuned as Andrew keeps the ghosts of South Austin at bay and makes plans for a follow up to Floating Shift. A special note to Mark Ambrose - no he ain't leaving until he's done and the leaving comes! ![]() photo by J Griffis Smith |
